SlingPlayer for the iPhone on 3G

Since making the switch from Windows Mobile and Blackberry to the iPhone I thought not having access to my Slingbox would be my biggest issue.  When SlingMedia started their iPhone application development I was excited.  I mean this would be ideal.

About 18 months ago my 1st gen Slingbox took a dive, power supply I thought.  I tried reviving it with another power supply, but no luck.  So I just tossed the unit onto my growing pile of old, out dated, powered plastic.

This morning however my ears perked up.  Slingbox’s iPhone application has now been approved for 3g.  The original iPhone application on used Wifi.  Having 3G may have just changed my tune on watching live TV in my iPhone.  Maybe it’s time to invest in a new Slingbox?

PocketInformant | an App I thought I would never use again

PocketInformant use to be just a PocketPC app.  Back in “the day” I bought my share of Pocket PC apps.  Hearing about PocketInformant getting released for the iPhone takes me back to the days when we talked sleds/sleeves, iPaqs, Compact Flash, the Jornada, or even when Casio played the PDA game.

Not sure I need PocketInformant, but here some video coverage at MacWorld.

MacBookPro and the Core I(5,7)

Will someone important please call Apple and tell them to release the MacBookPros with the Core I processors?  I really WANT a new one.  My dual core 2.4ghz 4 year old unit is working just fine.  It’s really just a matter of want.  So someone pick up the phone, ringy dingy…

Forum Is Up

I’ve always been excited about new solutions.  Since I’m a huge Wordpress guy I was glad to come across Simple:Press.  Now I know this site doesn’t really need a forum, but a group I belong to needs a forum for some planning.

A few friends from another Denver Handheld User Group is wanting to branch off and start a new group.  The current group has been dominated by a few individuals which is not going helping others.  The group use to help each other no matter what platform, Apple, Windows, Droid, Blackberry, Palm.   The group has suddenly turned into an instruction session by one of the members.  The “teaching” is very one-sided.  I understand we all have opinions, some very strong.  A social group that meets on a Saturday morning is not the place for name calling and device bashing.  Seriously it’s a phone, an operating system, an application.

The new group is in the process of forming.  I hope we can meet in the Denver Tech Center once a month.  The plan is to have format that we stick with every meeting.  Facilitators will be chosen by the group two months ahead of time.  That persons job is just to keep everyone on schedule and to keep the conversation from being dominated.  As for other info, that’s about it so far.  Please check out the forum that has been dedicated to this group.

editing…

I’m dong some maintenance, theme editing and even adding a forum this weekend(1/30-31/10).  Bare with me while I get things better than normal.

I am also growing unhappy with the local Mobile User Group I have been attending.  A few members and I have been tossing around the idea of a starting a new group.  If you’re in Denver and would like to be apart post up in the comment section and I’ll make sure to get you the meeting information.

my Wednesday Apple prediction

  • The Apple iReader will be released.  Two versions a) an AT&T 3g and Wifi b) Wifi only.  Yes folks I think Apple is sticking with AT&T.  I don’t believe Apple wants to move away from the GSM, SIM based, world standard.
  • Core I5 processors in the 15″ MBPs and the Core I7 in the 17″(I will buy that one)

Some of you are asking yourselves why do I think Apple will stay with AT&T.  It’s very simple.  Almost everyone hates their mobile carrier.  Whether it’s Verizon, Spring, T-Mobile, AT&T, etc, we all hate them for some reason.  I also think this because Apple does not want to move away from SIM card based mobile devices.  Building a CDMA and GSM device is a waste of resources in Apple’s mind If you want our devices change carriers.

I’m ready to go out on a limb here, but I think in the near future Apple will buy AT&T’s wireless division.  I think Apple is very interested in keeping pace with Google.  A few years ago when the 700mghz network became available, and Google was bidding, I think Apple was very intrigued by this.  Asking themselves why would Google want that.  This got Apple thinking about mobile communications on a different level, not just hardware.

Apple is very tatical.  They start by releasing devices that cause AT&T to spend money and build their network.

Remember this is from someone who thinks Google will buy Verizon too. :)

8-2008 psychic moment is coming true

According to Gizmodo today

According to me over a year ago

Finally one of my Apple product psychic moments is coming true.  Now if they’ll release a MacMini with Blu-Ray, I’ll be batting a thousand.  Oh wait…I also think they will soon turn the MacMini into a gaming console to run downloaded, full sized games from the app store.

Apple Magic Mouse

Fry’s in Las Vegas has the new Apple Magic Mouse in stock.  I picked up three.

July/Aug/Sept 2008 iPhone Upgraders: 32gb now $200 cheaper

Picture 4

A few weeks ago I pre-ordered my new iPhone 3GS for delivery this Friday.  I was under the impression that I was going to pay $499.  I was an early adopter of the 3G version(launch day) and was only being offered a $200 cut form the $699 retail, no contract price.

Today I log in to AT&T and run through the upgrade process and it’s offering me the 3GS for $299 with 2 year contact.  A story broke yesterday on Gizmodo that AT&T was July/Sept/Aug 2008 upgraders a better deal, but the prices won;’t show up till today.

Bottom line is that AT&T just saved me $200 tomorrow.  My $349 sale of my 3G on Craiglists on Monday just got a little sweeter!

GV Mobile for the iPhone

I sure am glad I picked up a Grand Central number back in the day.  Since that number was handed out during it’s beta, Google has bought the company and have turned it into GoogleVoice.

Google has recently released a video on YouTube describing a new iPhone app that allows you to dial out using your GV account.  Check out the video.

UPDATE: XROAD’s G-Map Is Back

XROAD just re-released G-Map for the iPhone.  Search G-Map in your iTunes store.  The released has some bugs fixs and has new version number.

This software is very helpful for thos of us that don’t have 3G 100% of the time.  The maps are store on the device.  Unlike the Google maps that require an internet connection to load.  This really makes the application run quickly.

Well worth the $24.99 for the West where I live.

MacMingle.com | Douglas County, CO Mac User Group

picture-1I have been promising for months to get the MacMingle.com site up.  I finally got around to doing it tonight.  It’s using bbpress.  Bbpress is free forum software by the same folks that wrote Wordpress.

The interface is great and plugins are plentiful.  We’ll see how it works and feels long term.  If your in the Denver Metro area and want to help me start a Mac User group in Douglas County post up of at MacMingle.com

You can also follow the progress of the Group formation on Twitter, User ID MacMingle.

MacMini Updated today…I might upgrade.

Mini | This Mac jumps in graphics, hard drive size, but not much more internally.

On the outside Apple is offering one more USB, a mini DVi, and a mini display. There are conflicting reports that this Mini will offer dual monitor support.  If it does this could make the Mini the ultimate conferance room machine.

Personally I would get one for the home entertainment room. We currently have a Mini running our DVD collection. The built in bookshelf that holds it has a monitor but it’s currently not hooked up. The Mini is just sending video directly to the 56″ HD TV via a DVI to HDMI cable.  Hopefully with a new Mini I can prep videos for playback on one monitor, then move them over to the larger screen for viewing.

Could this be the death of Apple’s iDisk?

Airport Extreme & Time Machine | from the looks of the spec on these new network devices there is a firmware upgrade. MobileMe customers will be able to access any file on these devices. The drive must be connected via USB on the Airport Extreme.

Note for existing AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule customers
Existing AirPort Extreme (MA073 and MB053) and Time Capsule (MB276 and MB277) customers can access their AirPort Disk / Time Capsule disk through Mobile Me over the Internet by upgrading to AirPort Utility 5.4.1 and AirPort firmware 7.4.1. Subscription to Mobile Me online services is required for this feature. Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi and Guest Networking features are only available to new AirPort Extreme (MB763) and Time Capsule (MB764 and MB765) customers.

Pretty nice feature. Is this the end of the iDisk?  Let’s hope so.  That has been an annoyance to me to say the least.  I hate the way files have to be stored in it. I am meticulous about file folder structure, and having to pull something out of it so I can use it at work is aggregating. I know I need to relax. :)

However, being able to access file MY personal cloud, with my own structure, is a pretty cool feature to me. I won’t need iDisk with this feature added to my AE.

Any Ninjas on your gift list?

If your like me I have a Ninja or two on my Christmas list.  If someone one your list has a set of those two toed sock shoes I just found you a perfect gift for them.

There not really throwing stars.  Well designed magnets.  My oldest son is going to love these. No he is not a REAL Ninja.

Anyone Else using Boxee.tv?

Anyone else here using the Boxee.tv Alpha?  Looks pretty cool.  It’s meant for use on the Apple TV.  However they have a MacOS X version.

Boxee has a cool idea.  It links all your TV/Music and other video in one place.  The key here is that it also links you to the network run TV show sites like Hulu, CBS.com, etc.  This way you don’t have to URL browse for your favorite shows.  A couple clicks through the Boxee UI and your linked to your favorite shows.  It has a few minor glitches right, but it’s only a Alpha right now.

I am using it on my MacBookPro.  Most of the shows I like are on CBS.com or Hulu.  I may be re-evaluating my need for TIVO.  Domino’s Pizza is not my favorite anyway.

Boxee also offers Netflix download customers the ability to watch downloaded movies.  This is all the rage these days.  The PS3, XBOX 360, TIVO and many other set top boxes are signed with Netflix.  I use Blockbuster’s service, but it is getting hard not to switch with all the options that NetFlix is offering.

Time will tell if Boxee.tv will last.  I frankly believe it will be something I use at first.  I’ll enjoy the experiance, but see the lack of a feature or two that something else will offer and I will stop using it.

AT&T to offer iPhone tethering

It’s all over the Internet. AT&T is going to offer iPhone tethering. The only question still outstanding is how much it will cost. Most rumor sites agree somewhere around $30.00.

I don’t really have need for it these days. I used tethering quite bit a few years ago. These days WiFi is almost everywhere. I also find myself using my iPhone for tasks that I use to pull out the lappy for.

I would like to see some info about how the connection is going to be made. A bluetooth connection in combo with a 3G tether will drain the iPhone battery pretty quickly. Let’s hope those of you that decide to subscribe can us it via USB also.

Protect your Wi-Fi from hacking

I saw this great tip on Lifehacker via a link from a Facebook friend.  My Apple Airport does not have this setting but I thought I would pass it along to your guys that do.  Hope it helps.

WEP Wi-Fi security has been known as an easy-to-crack security protocol for a while now, which is why it was superseded by the more secure Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) standard. But now a PhD candidate studying encryption has found an exploit in the WPA standard that would allow a hacker to “send bogus data to an unsuspecting WiFi client,” completely compromising your Wi-Fi security and opening your network to all sorts of hacking. Lucky for you, it’s not terribly difficult to protect yourself against the new exploit.

The key: Just log into your router, switch off Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) as an encryption mode, and use Advanced Encryption System (AES) only. TKIP is the only protocol that the hack applies to, so switching to AES-only will ensure that your Wi-Fi network is safe again. It’s quick and easy, so do yourself a favor and make the adjustment now so you don’t run into any problems in the future.
